Biography
Hian was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
A resident of La Jolla, California for over 35 years, he has three daughters, one son and four grandsons. His wife, Susan, is also his in-house editor. She also edits technical papers at her job at the University of California San Diego.

Hian is a regular contributor to The Military Press, a California semi-monthly journal with a circulation of 100,000. Along with travel features, he writes a monthly California Roundup for the publication. Hian's travel stories have appeared in the Columbia Daily Tribune (Missouri), Hanford Sentinel, Selma Enterprise and Kingsburg Recorder (all in California) as well as the Daily Chronicle (DeKalb, Illinois) and the Garden Island (Kauai, Hawaii). The San Diego Jewish Journal featured his award winning The Sabra Who Cooks Cajun. Chabad.org ran his The Jews of Cancun feature. Additionally, he is a regular travel commentator at On Tour with Dave and Carmel broadcasting from Sacramento, CA.
