Get Ready for Good Times-RX for Fun

Linda Ballou

Outfitters are fond of saying anyone can enjoy outdoor holidays. I think this is true with the caveat that you follow the few basic rules outlined in my proposed 1500-2000 word article “Get Ready for Good Times.” I’ve enjoyed numerous outdoor adventures that include kayaking, hiking, river rafting and horseback riding. Through trial and error, I’ve arrived at the following ten suggestions for your readers to prepare for an active holiday.

(1) Start basic training about a month before your holiday.
(2) Add exercises specific to the sport you will be enjoying to your daily regimen.
(3) Buy a Thermarest Pad for sleeping comfort, and use it as an exercise pad on the trip.
(4) Buy a back brace for extra support on tough days.
(5) Remember who you are. Don’t become competitive with the group.
(6) Steer clear of alcohol.
(7) Let your guide know if you are having trouble.
(8) Lose a couple of pounds before the trip.
(9) Invest in the proper gear, including a helmet.
(10) Do a test run before you commit to a week of using muscles you have never met before.
